At Concord the MFL Department looks for the linguistic potential in every child and we aim to promote interest in and enjoyment of all language learning. We encourage our students to be independent learners and foster the development of their linguistic skills and knowledge of different cultures. We recognise the importance of developing communication skills, whilst underpinning the central role of grammar.
We offer French and Spanish to all Form 3 (Year 9) students and at Form 4 (Year 10) students can choose whether to pursue these languages at GCSE. Spanish is also offered to sixth-formers as an accelerated GCSE course, which may then be continued to Advanced Subsidiary level. Spanish, French and German are offered at A level. We follow the Edexcel International GCSE and A level specifications.
Chinese (Mandarin), German and Japanese may be taken as extra-curricular activities with the possibility of continuing to GCSE.
We are very fortunate to have the assistance of native speakers in French and Spanish to help, specifically, with intonation and pronunciation and to offer individual support in preparing for oral exams. Further support is also available in after school clinics. In addition we organise an inter-school debating competition in all three languages for A level students.
The Department regularly arranges visits to see French and Spanish films, and trips abroad are organised, often in conjunction with other Departments, such as History and Art. Recent trips have included visits to Madrid and Barcelona, Spain, and to Normandy, France. Last year students had the opportunity to join a college expedition to Costa Rica organised by Outlook Expeditions. These trips are open to all students whether or not they study a foreign European language.
