Concord

named as one of the top STEM schools in the country

Friday October 6, 2017

Concord has been named as one of the top STEM – science, technology, engineering and mathematics – schools in the country. This accolade received by Concord is the result of new rankings produced by government backed education campaign Your Life. Your Life is a three year campaign to ensure the UK has the maths and physics skills it needs to succeed in today’s competitive global economy. Concord’s ranking as one of the top STEM schools in the country has been warmly welcomed by Principal Neil Hawkins. He said today:  “It is really excellent to see that Concord’s commitment to the STEM disciplines has been recognised by this government backed campaign. “It is a tribute to the skills of our staff and the determination and talent of our students.  With our new science facility opening in January 2018 the future is very bright for the STEM subjects here at Concord.” Your Life campaign priorities offering experiences and information to enable young people to make informed subject choices post-16 – inspiring them to study maths and physics as a gateway to wide ranging careers, whilst triggering employers to recruit and retain that talent. Your Life is sponsored by industry, supported by government and led by a board of directors chaired by Edwina Dunn, co-founder of dunnhumby and CEO of Starcount. She said:  “School performance measurements should more closely reflect the skill requirements of the UK economy and reward subject expertise in the high demand skills areas. “I am calling for an urgent re-think of how schools are assessed to give greater weight to the subjects that open up the most career prospects.” In accord with its top rating, Concord is currently building a new science block which is due for completion in January 2018. The two storey science block covering 4,100 square metres – nearly treble the size of the existing facility – will create 22 laboratories.  There will be seven labs for each of the disciplines, biology, physics and chemistry and a research lab.
