Lower School public speaking team through to regional final

Thursday February 15, 2018

Concord’s Lower School public speaking team is through to the regional final of the English Speaking Union public speaking competition. The Concord team of Olivia Marcham (speaker), Kate Moore-Myers, (questioner) and Robbie Smith (chair), chose the topic of ‘Equal pay for women – can it ever happen?’ as their speaker’s subject. The Concord team was one of two schools from a total of six in the first round to make it through to the next stage of the competition. It is the second year that a team from Concord has competed in the English Speaking Union (ESU) competition and Olivia, Kate and Robbie are now busy preparing a different topic for the ESU north-west regional final at Grange School, Northwich, on March 3.  Success in the regional final will put the team through to the ESU national final later in the spring. Chair Robbie and questioner Kate had only 15 minutes of preparation as during the public speaking competition they have to work with a speaker from another team.  And it will be the same procedure in the regional final. “They have to think very quickly on their feet,” said Concord English teacher Ms. Sacha Lake who is the team’s mentor.
