Science

Science at Concord is very popular, and our facilities are exceptional.

The vision for science learning at Concord goes beyond achieving exceptional exam results, it is to develop our students into young scientists who are scientifically articulate and literate and who are highly skilled in scientific method. Concord students become creative scientific problem solvers and develop their skills of rational analysis and critical thinking. These important guiding principals provide students with the outlook at opportunities they need to access STEM degrees and careers at the very best universities.

The science building is a purpose-built state of the art facility opened in 2019. It has 22 fully equipped laboratories, 7 for each of the three branches of science and a “Special Projects Laboratory”. The laboratories are all equipped for experiments beyond school level. Equipment in the Special Projects Laboratory for example includes 3D printers, a laser cutter, a furnace, a centrifuge, wire melting point apparatus, UV spectrometer, IR spectrometer and muon detector.

Even the building’s foyer and corridors are designed to inspire a love of science- the 2 large and fully staffed prep labs are on display to students and there are museum grade displays such as the iconic short-faced bear skeleton, an interactive periodic table, interactive giant DNA helix, a giant wave pendulum and a corridor timeline of scientific discoveries.

F3 Science
Students in Form 3 study a broad science curriculum with key components all taught by specialist teachers in our science laboratories. They are challenged with both theory and practical science, developing awareness of scientific process as well as knowledge. Form 3 students also have access to the science super curriculum and can join STEM clubs and enter competitions.

GCSE Science Subjects
All students in Forms 4 and 5 study separate GCSEs in Biology, Physics and Chemistry. There are also other optional GCSEs in Astronomy and Psychology.

A Level Sciences
Concord offers A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Science based Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
A significant number of our EPQ students choose to work on a scientific topic and many undertake practical investigations in the Special Projects Laboratory where they can use more advanced equipment supervised by members of our science staff.
