Astronomy
“Astronomy compels the soul to look upwards and leads us from this world to another.”
—Plato
Most people are fascinated by the night sky, solar system and universe.
Studying Astronomy at Concord can help students to understand our position in the universe, the movements of planets and stars, the cycles in the night and daytime sky, and the way in which we use technology to observe and interact with space.

Students follow an incredible story of how scientists from ancient civilisations to the modern day have used their imagination and carefully recorded visual measurement to explore the universe in which we live. They will develop highly valued skills such as scientific thinking, problem-solving skills, and the ability to evaluate, which are fundamental skills for both universities and employers.
Further Study
After GCSE, some students choose to enhance their knowledge of Astronomy through EPQ projects in Sixth Form. Examples of EPQ projects with an Astronomy component undertaken by our students include:
- Observation and Photometric Analysis of an Eclipsing Binary System
- Correlation Between Cosmic Ray Intensity and Solar Cycle
- Day-night Variations of Secondary Cosmic Shower Intensity at Ground Level
- Meteor Detection Using Radio Waves
Futures
Those with an interest and understanding in Astronomy may read a degree in Astronomy, Maths or Physics, and could find themselves in a career in software engineering, aerospace research and development, teaching and lecturing to name a few.
