Physics Bowl
Concord’s physicists took part in a prestigious international Physics competition for high-school students run by the American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT). Over 1000 schools world-wide compete in the Physics Bowl for both individual and school honours.
48 Concord physicists, from Form 5 up to 6.2 year groups, tackled a 40 question test paper under exam conditions, with those who had been studying Physics for longer taking on the more advanced “Division 2” paper aimed at pre-university students.
Concord Physics Teacher Mr Wargos said:” I think it’s important that we didn’t just train 6.2 students to take part, anyone who wanted a challenge could participate, including many F4 and F5.”
Concord’s region includes all of Europe and parts of the USA as well as a number of other countries and the College’s team came an impressive 4th in the entire region in the harder Division 2 paper.
In individual results, Jiale in 6.1 placed in the world top 100 in the division and was the highest ranking student from any UK school.
“To have a student ranked among the world top 100 is an outstanding feat demonstrating our students’ exceptional talent and dedication.” Mr Wargos added.
Concord’s Principal Dr Michael Truss, congratulated all of the students who took part: “Learning about Physics is fascinating, and we have many very successful students in Physics exams. What competitions like this add is another opportunity for students to take on a challenge outside of their curriculum and to think about Physics a little differently. I’m delighted to see that so many Concord students have risen to the challenge.”
