Day sees Teresa House crowned winners of the House Cup

Tuesday June 8, 2021

Following the half term break, Concord’s eagerly anticipated House Cup competition culminated with the annual Sports Day (House Athletics) event. With three Houses potentially able to be crowned winners of the House Cup, Sports Day was as competitive as ever – with a large number of college records broken across the day. With the sun shining, the day consisted of 40 field events, 40 individual races and 15 relay races, with 380 competitors in total. Whilst having to operate differently to previous years due to Covid-19 restrictions – including the exclusion of the tug-of-war contests – Concord introduced a couple of new races, including 4x400m relays and 4x100m relays, divided into year group ‘bubbles’. Concord’s Mrs Kerslake of the Sports Department said: “A huge well done from the sports department to all competitors. With excellent performances, many records were broken. “Excluding the new events, we had 3 new records in the high jump; 1 in the long jump; 3 in the javelin; 1 in the shotput; 3 in the 100m; 4 in the 200m; 2 in the 400m; and 2 in the 1500m. “Most notably, Jacob (6.1) broke the 100m record with a time of 11.55 seconds – and the previous record hadn’t been beat since 1997. “Jennifer (6.1) broke the 400m sprint record by 10 seconds, recording a time of 1:09.63, and amazingly, Beth (Form 5) set a time of 5:17.00 for the 1500m, beating the previous record by almost a minute!” A list of the individual champions of the day is displayed below: LS BOYS – DARWIN (Pankhurst) LS GIRLS – VILTE (Gandhi) US BOYS – JOSH (Gandhi) US GIRLS – JENNIFER (Mandela) In spite of the fact that Teresa had no individual champions on the day, Teresa House recorded 13 new records and topped the leaderboard for points – resulting in them winning Sports Day (1st – Teresa, 2nd – Mandela, 3rd – Pankhurst, 4th – Gandhi). Upon the announcement of the results on School Photo Day last Friday, students anxiously tried to tally up the points total contributing to the overall Inter-House Trophy. With just 9 points separating first and fourth place, unfortunately, there could only be one winner… Congratulations to Teresa for winning the House Cup! The House standings for the year are as follows: 1st – Teresa – 56 2nd – Pankhurst – 51 3rd – Mandela – 46 4th – Gandhi – 45 Reflecting on Sports Day and the other House competitions, Head of Teresa House, Mr Chris Arthur said: “After a challenging year it was wonderful to see so many members of the House outside competing, having fun and cheering on and supporting friends from every House. “This made the event even more special and joyful and I was so pleased to see once more the extraordinary achievements and House spirit shown by Teresa. “I am delighted that their hard work and perseverance have led to us winning the cup after such a difficult year with us all having to have been so separate, this coming together has finished the year on a real high. “It has been such a pleasure throughout the year to see members of the House working together, encouraging and helping one another and once more creating that family atmosphere that makes Teresa so special.” View the Sports Day photo gallery by clicking here.
