Wednesday February 3, 2021

Interested in a career in medicine? Prospective medics in Years 11 and 12 across Shropshire, the West Midlands and Welsh borders are invited to Concord’s Medical Futures Virtual Conference, free of charge. Click here to register for the event which takes on Saturday 27th February 2021, 9am – 3.15pm. This year the conference will take place virtually for the first time ever, via Microsoft Teams. The conference, now in its fourth year, is designed to give students an in-depth and valuable insight into the highly competitive application process for medical school, in addition to providing virtual work experience by providing access to a wide range of doctors from different specialities to speak to. The event is generously supported again this year by The Medic Portal, a leading resource and training provider for everyone who wants a career in medicine — and those that advise them. They are officially partnered with the Royal Society of Medicine. Sign-ups are operating on a ‘first come first serve’ basis, with places available for 150 external students. ** Please note, Year 12 students will have first preference for signing up this year. If places remain, Year 11 will be registered to join in order of signing up. ** The day will cover all aspects of the highly competitive admissions process to enable you to make a successful university application. An outline of the programme is provided below:
  • How to succeed in your medical school application (work experience, admissions tests, interviews)
  • Choosing the right medical school
  • Excelling in your medical school personal statement
  • Using your fifth UCAS choice, plus additional options including alternatives to medicine, independent medical schools within the UK and abroad
  • Meet the professionals – an opportunity to hear from doctors working in a range of specialities including Emergency Medicine, Paediatrics, Respiratory Medicine, General Practice and many more
  • Writing a reflective journal for work experience
View the conference flyer here: Medical Futures Virtual Conference Flyer This year, the keynote presentation is a hugely current topic: “A letter from ICU – lived experience of COVID from the brink of life”, delivered by Dr Matt Morgan – intensive care doctor, researcher and author of ‘Critical’, and a nominee for the 2020 Royal Society David Attenborough Prize for public engagement in science. Dr Morgan – who works at University Hospital Wales and is also a clinical lecturer at Cardiff Medical School – has appeared on national and international television and radio stations and has spoken to large audiences at some of the largest book festivals in the world. A regular writer for the internationally acclaimed British Medical Journal, his recent article, “A letter from the ICU” is one of their most popular-ever opinion articles and has now been read by over half a million people worldwide and viewed over three million times after featuring on Channel 4. Participation in the day will give you access to a huge range of support materials from the Concord College Medical Society which supports around 40 applicants every year. In addition to this you will also be invited to further support events running later in the year on interview preparation, work experience and special interest lectures.
