group takes to the slopes in Austria over half term

Friday February 28, 2020

A group consisting of 47 students and 6 staff members took to the slopes in Austria for an action-packed skiing trip over half term. The Concord group travelled to a sports resort area in Golling, Austria, via coach – on a journey that took 26 hours both ways! The seven-day ski trip, held annually, has taken place in Austria for the second year running, whilst previous visits have been to Pila in Northern Italy. Students from Form 3 up to 6.2 and staff stayed in the Goldener Ochs Hotel and over the course of the week they took part in 25 hours of skiing tuition, spread across six groups. For 6.1 student Mark, it was his first time skiing: “Although the thought of a 24-hour coach ride there and back was enough to make me wince, there's no other way I'd have spent my half term. “The skiing was fun, and it’s given me a chance to get closer to my cohort-mates, and a most fun experience getting to see a side to my teachers I'd never have otherwise.” Said Mr Daniel Wilson, Assistant Principal (Professional Development Systems): “This year consisted of just skiers. Perhaps next year we will expand to snowboarding again too. “Most of the students were beginners this year – forming three groups. We also had two intermediate groups and an advanced group, but everyone demonstrated clear progressions. “It was nice to see some familiar faces from previous school skiing trips, so watching them improve has been great. Some of them have really come on in ability. “Five hours of tuition per day was really beneficial. The advanced group were managing jumps and black runs by the end of the week!” The students and staff were fortunate enough to enjoy warm sunshine throughout the week too and enjoyed a variety of evening activities including a visit to a traditional ice cream parlour, a visit to Salzburg, bum-boarding, snowball fights, a pizza night and a trip to a swimming spa. “Hopefully next year we can expand this trip to even more students, as interest grows year upon year. “We’ll start to advertise this to students and staff within the next few weeks, planning to travel February half term again.” View the photo gallery from the trip by clicking here.
