‘Channel Swim’ in aid of Birmingham Children’s Hospital

Tuesday November 19, 2019

6.1 student Cate is raising “lifesaving” money for Birmingham Children’s Hospital, by swimming the equivalent of The English Channel, in just seven days! Cate will be swimming 200 lengths a day for seven days straight, in the Abraham Derby 25m swimming pool, over the Christmas break. Cate – who herself, underwent lifesaving pulmonary surgery as a child – hopes to raise an ‘ambitious’ £1000 to support Birmingham Children’s Hospital, so more children can be fortunate enough to receive such treatment. And it’s not Cate’s first fundraiser for the hospital… In primary school, Cate completed another impressive feat, swimming 3k, as well as taking part in bake sales and other fundraisers for the department close to her heart. Perhaps more impressive, Cate, who swims regularly as a hobby and at Concord, will be taking part in this fundraiser in the public swimming pool, surrounding by other pool users throughout the week, with just her mum and dad supporting. Said Cate: “The public pool still has lanes, so business shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Mum and dad will also be there to help count the lengths, as I certainly don’t want to miscount ha-ha!” When asked about her training and managing her studies, Cate said: “Currently I train twice a week, but I have been training since June, gradually increasing the distance I swim. “It’s sort of like training building up to a marathon. “I’m finding it quite manageable though. I finished my GCSEs last year and I’m in my first year of A levels, but it’s perfect timing training to complete this at the start of the holidays.” Cate has shared her fundraising challenge with staff and students at Concord in recent assemblies, and has received a positive response so far… If you feel you would like to support Cate and Birmingham Children’s Hospital, you can donate securely on Cate’s JustGiving page.
