Message from the Chairman of Trustees

Thursday September 5, 2019

It was announced by the The Board of Trustees in January that Mr Hawkins would be stepping down from his post as Principal on 31st August 2020 to become Global Principal of Concord College International (CCIL) with responsibility for developing further partner schools overseas which will be of direct benefit to Concord College, Acton Burnell. The Board of Trustees has gone through an extensive process to seek his successor and I am pleased to announce that we have chosen Dr Michael Truss to fill the post of Principal.  Owing to family commitments he will not commence until 1st September 2021 and I am pleased to say that Mr Hawkins has agreed to remain in post until that date. Dr Truss has a First Class MPhys degree in Physics from Oxford and a PhD in Theoretical Astrophysics from Leicester followed by Postdoctoral Research at St Andrews and a Teaching Fellowship at Durham. He decided to move into teaching Mathematics in 2007 at Bedales School where he subsequently became Head of Academic Enrichment.  In 2015 he moved to Barnard Castle School as Deputy Head (Academic). He impressed the Trustees with his enthusiasm for teaching and focus on the individual student as well as his being very much in sympathy with the ethos of Concord.  In addition to his evident academic background he is enthusiastic about outdoor education and has a strong background in sport.  He is married with two teenage children and we believe that he and his wife will continue to develop the warmth and community spirit which Concord embodies. Mr Hawkins will continue to have very close links with Concord College after September 2021 and will be involved in maintaining links with alumni, in assisting in promoting Concord around the world and in interviewing potential students. Dr Iain Bride Chairman of Trustees
