Hospital Volunteers Recognised
A group of Concord students received certificates recognising their volunteering activities this week. The group had all worked for at least 50 hours as hospital volunteers.
8 students in the group have all have completed 50 or more hours of volunteering as part of the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital NHS Trust’s Youth Volunteer Programme.
Volunteers are able to be in patient support roles, ward helpers or meeting and greeting at the hospital. For example, some students helped hospital housekeepers bringing drinks and food to patients.
One of the volunteer team, 6.2 student Jady, volunteered on Sundays and some Wednesdays, she volunteered to broaden her experience of healthcare having already spent time visiting hospitals in Hong Kong. Jady particularly enjoyed interacting with the patients and families, realising how important that can be for them.
Many of the Concord student volunteers are aspiring to work in medicine themselves as doctors or dentists and the experience of helping others in a healthcare setting was both inspiring and enlightening. Jady for example found that the hospital environment was more pleasant than she had imagined after reading news reports.
Mrs Orlagh Hotchkiss, Concords Assistant Principal, Co-Curricular, Outreach and Inclusion congratulated the students on their efforts and dedication: “It is a pleasure to hear of the superb commitment, kindness and determination demonstrated by these students.
“Their efforts and continued volunteering have no doubt made a positive contribution on all those they have worked with, and I am sure this experience will continue to enrich their academic studies. They embody the true values of Concord, and we are incredibly proud of them and their work. ”
