wins Inter-House Trophy after Swimming Gala

Friday May 11, 2018

This year’s inter-house competition culminated with the House Swimming Gala, and was widely regarded as one of the closest inter-house finales ever. Large crowds of students gathered at the pool to cheer on competitors and support their teams in this year’s final event. With the overall standings for the inter-house trophy still close following Sports Day, all four teams were keen to put in a strong performance in the 24 race gala. Concord Sports Manager, Mr John Canney said: “It was really exciting. In the penultimate race, Pankhurst and Mandela could both win the competition, so their last relay was intense.” Head of Pankhurst House, Mrs Hattie Canney added: “It was a fantastic event this year and the races were so close. It was often just the smallest of margins separating the competitors.” Three school records were broken this year; Jennifer recorded a time of 39.50 seconds in the Form 3/4 Girls Breaststroke race for Mandela. Stacey, also of Mandela House set a record of 31.00 seconds in the 6.1/6.2 Girls Backstroke race. Pankhurst’s Chris, Lucinda, Ian and Pjotr broke the record for the Mixed Medley Relay with a time of 1.17.25. Individual champion awards were presented to four students who excelled on the day. Will (Pankhurst) and Jennifer (Mandela) won the prizes for the Lower School, whilst Pjotr (Pankhurst) and Stacey (Mandela) won the individual prizes for the Sixth Form. In the end it was Pankhurst who were victorious, winning 10 of the 24 races, followed by Mandela, Gandhi and Teresa. This meant that Pankhurst were crowned winners of the 2018 inter-house trophy. Congratulations to Pankhurst House for their consistent performances in the inter-house events this school year, and well done to all who’ve taken part in this year’s competition. Thank you to Mrs Kerslake and the sports staff for organising the swimming gala, with a special mention to our student lifeguards for their officiating, time-keeping and managing pool safety.
