Wednesday August 2, 2017

Four scholars, three from Germany and one from Russia attended the July summer course at Concord College. Julius Schneider, 14, of Hambourg, and Christian Eitel, 17, from Fulda, near Frankfurt, both won scholarships through the Leighton award. The award was set up by Concord in recognition of many years’ service of now retired summer school Director John Leighton. Julius was the winner of the July award and Christian the August award, though he chose to attend in July. Julius said he had enjoyed the summer school and making friendships, having fun and improving his English. Christian, who said his stay at Concord College had enabled him to improve his English skills and make what he hopes will be lifelong friendships, knew the third student from Germany. Louisa Hohmann, 14, winner of the spring award competition, is also from Fulda and was attending her second summer school at Concord. The fourth scholar, Ekaterina Toporova, 17, is from Russia and was paying her first visit to the UK, which she described as ‘very important’ for her English. “There isn’t a great deal of opportunity to improve my English back home,” said Ekaterina who was winner of the British Council Russia competition, which was nationwide.
