Over 500 students and staff at Concord witnessed this morning’s 90.8% solar eclipse. Among those watching were nine students in form four who are the first group to study GCSE astronomy at the college.
Concert a Triumph!
The annual international concert ‘Music and dance from around the World’ was once again a superb spectacle that delighted the audience with the talent and energy of the performers. Over 250 students from Concord took part in the concert performed at Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury to an invited audience including VIP guest, the Mayor of Shrewsbury.
International Concert Sunday March 15
‘Music and Dance from Around the World’ is the theme for the annual Concord international charity fundraising concert at Shrewsbury’s Theatre Severn on Sunday March 15. Over 250 students, more than half the school, and will be appearing on stage, many in their national costume.
Modern Foreign Languages Debate
Concord recently hosted its second inter-school Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) debating competition in French and German. Students competed against a team from Wrekin College on topics such as immigration, the death penalty and celebrity culture.
Bumper Crop of Distinctions in BMO
A bumper crop of distinctions in round one of the British Maths Olympiad has been awarded to Concord students. Twelve Concord students in the sixth form achieved distinctions compared with last year’s eight.
New York Trip
A group of Concord students enjoyed an exciting trip to New York over the half term break. The trip was a joint venture between the Art Department and Mr Wilson who co-ordinates US university applications at Concord. Over five days the students visited many of the iconic sights of the city as well as visiting museums and art galleries or New York University, Yale and Princeton.
Concord Delighted with 100 Year Old Steinway
Concord has acquired the long term loan of a 100 year old Steinway. The piano’s new home for the foreseeable future will be the Main Hall at Concord where it can be regularly played by students.
Success for Senior Debating Team in MACE
Concord’s senior debating team is through to the West of England regional finals of the Schools Mace, the oldest national debating competition in the UK. Ellen Kerslake and Leo He, who are both in their final year at Concord, won the second round of this prestigious competition.
Fashion Show 2015
The seventh annual Concord Fashion Show which was bigger and better than ever, took place at the on Saturday 7th February in a new and improved venue. For the first time it featured a professional style catwalk inside the indoor marquee in the Sports Hall with an audience of 400!
In memoriam Mrs Anne Oertel
It is with deep sadness that Concord has learnt of the death of Mrs Anne Oertel, the wife of one of the founding Principals of the College. The lovely lady who was known at Concord as Mrs Paul passed away on Saturday 1st February aged 91 years.
Concord Students Outstanding at MUN Conference
Two Concord College students, Andrea Solis and Nick Ong, who took part in a Model United Nations conference in London won awards for their outstanding contributions.
Xavier Project Update
The founder of a charity to help Congolese refugee children in Uganda to gain access to education has paid a special visit to Concord. Edmund Page, who founded the Xavier Project in Uganda, was in the UK to say a big ‘thank you’ to students at Concord who have raised £6,000 in just over 12 months through the sale of 1,500 text books to incoming students.
STOP PRESS! Concord Ranked in Top 10 in DfE League Table
Concord has been ranked 6th in the A level league table produced today based on data collected by the Department for Education (DfE).
Careers Fair is a First for Concord
A Careers Fair for Form 5 and 6.1 students has been staged for the first time at Concord. More than 200 students took advantage of the opportunity to explore different career paths with representatives from a variety of professions as well as universities.
Record Number of Oxbridge Offers
A record of 21 Oxbridge offers is being celebrated by students at Concord. This beats the previous best of 18 offers three years’ ago. Six Concord students have received offers for Oxford and the other 15 for Cambridge.
Concord Reaches 500
Concord College has welcomed 45 new students on Sunday 4th January and the new intake of students has boosted the total at Concord to more than 500 for the first time.
Visitors to Concord can be excused for mistaking twins Amanda and Karen Pike. Or is it Karen and Amanda Pike? As identical twins, there is a distinct likeness between the 26 year old sisters who are now working together at Concord.
Win for Public Speaking Team
The Concord senior public speaking team has beaten three other Shropshire schools to reach the next round of the annual BPW public speaking competition. The team of Anna Wood (speaker), Annabelle Lim (vote of thanks) and Simone Sim (chair person) are now through to the next round in Blackburn in early 2015.
Noah Wins Poster Competition
Concord student Noah Gornall is the Year 9 (Form 3) winner of the European Day of Languages Poster Competition 2014. Thirteen year old Noah, a day student, is the college’s first winner in the West Midlands poster competition.
Maths Team in National Final
Four six formers from Concord will be representing the college in the national team final of the UK Mathematics Trust and Further Mathematics Support Programme competition.
