Alumni Reunion in Shanghai
Concord’s 60th anniversary celebrations have begun with a gala dinner in Shanghai for Alumni. Past and present students of Concord College gathered for a reunion in Shanghai attended by the Principal Mr Hawkins and Vice Principal (Academic) Tom Lawrence.
BigHands.Biz Launched at Concord
Concord was chosen as the launchpad for a new interactive business game. During a careers event for 6.1 students on the penultimate day of the Summer Term, BigHands.Biz, aimed at teaching students the business basics through an interactive one day course, was launched.
Summer Term Ends
With term ending on 19th June and the final exams taking place just under a week later, it is time to reflect on what has been an extremely busy term at Concord.
Lower School Dinner
The Lower School Dinner is a formal celebration of the academic and extra-curricular successes of the students in Forms 3, 4 and 5 over the year. It is also one night when everyone gets to put on their smartest clothes! Nagima Madi and Lyazzat Itegulova (Form 4) share their thoughts on this year’s special occasion, which took place on 30th May.
V 50 Awards for Students
Sixteen students from Concord’s Outreach Society have been awarded V 50 certificates in recognition of completing fifty hours of volunteering.
Success in Intermediate Maths Olympiad
A Form 5 Concord student is among the world’s top 50 in his age group for mathematics. Gaziz Zhotabayev, who has just taken his GCSEs was one of the highest achievers and medal winners in this year’s Intermediate Mathematical Olympiad competition.
Geography Students Study the Locality
Exam season is well and truly underway with students sitting for GCSE, AS and A Levels from now until the end of June and Concord’s first group of Geography students have taken their first papers this week.
Lie House are 2009 Champions!
In an exciting competition this year, Lie House has won the Concord Interhouse trophy for sport for 2008/9.
Samba Band Share their Latin Groove!
On 24th April, Concord's Samba Drums Band brought a Latin groove to the streets of Shrewsbury as part of the St. George's Day celebrations in the town.
'Green' Themed Fashion Show
Three of Concord’s talented students put on a Fashion Show at the beginning of May and the clothes that they designed were all made out of recycled materials.
Young Enterprise Win Award
In their very first Young Enterprise Shropshire challenge, Concord’s team has won the trophy for ‘outstanding commitment’.
In the Swim!
The Summer Term’s sporting calendar of House competitions continued with the Swimming Gala on Sunday 3rd May. A large crowd gathered to cheer on the swimmers and to enjoy the barbecue and refreshments provided by the kitchen on the terrace outside the pool!
Interhouse Rugby Sevens
The second annual Interhouse Rugby Sevens took place on Sunday 26th April, after being reinstated in 2008 into the Concord sporting calendar. After a fantastic afternoon of rugby, Lie House were the eventual winners in a last minute thriller of a match!
Road Race 2009
On Saturday 25th April after morning tests, a large crowd gathered in front of the Main House for the annual Concord College Inter-House Road Race. This popular event marks the beginning of the athletics season at Concord every Summer Term.
Shi Yun in County Concerto Final
Shi Yun Khoo took part at the final of the county’s Young Musician of the Year 2009 competition which was held at the brand new Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury on the 1st of April.
Basketball Team in Epic Final
Concord’s Shropshire League winning senior basketball team yet again found themselves in a nail-biting final in the County Cup competition at the end of last term, only to be beaten in the final seconds by their rivals.
Students Run Local Marathon
Twenty Concord students took part in the inaugural Frodesley half and quarter marathons on Sunday 19th April. Encouraged by Head of Sport Albert Leon, the brave runners gave up their last afternoon of holiday to join this worthwhile event.
Student Investors Reach Regional Final
Students at Concord have succeeded in making money during one of the most difficult times on the stock markets. Over 20 teams at Concord College have been taking part in the ‘IFS Student Investor’ competition with one of them reaching the regional final in Birmingham.
Esther at Fencing World Championship
Concord has a world championship finalist in fencing. Esther Tan (6.1) has qualified for the junior and cadet fencing world championships in Belfast this month.
Comic Relief 2009
A day of having fun at Concord was orgainsed by the college’s own Charity Club on Saturday 14th March in aid of Comic Relief (aka Red Nose Day). This national biannual charity event had the slogan this year of ‘Do Something Funny for Money’ and at Concord the students and staff rose to the challenge!
