At the end of term Concord said farewell to Head of Sport, Albert Leon, who retires after 26 years on the teaching staff. And it was only by chance that he applied for a job at Concord in the first place, as globe-trotting Albert already had a job lined up in Colombia before he applied for a post at Concord!
Concord is delighted to announce a new initiative in the Music Department with the introduction of the BTEC qualification from September 2013 to replace the existing GCSE and A/AS level courses currently offered to students.
On Saturday 8th June 6.1 students at Concord were treated to an end of year dinner. The evening which had a Masquerade theme, was a chance to celebrate the end of a successful year academically and to bring the year group together for a sophisticated social event.
Lower School Dinner
The Lower School Dinner, which took place on 1st June, was a formal celebration of the academic and extra-curricular successes of the students in Forms 3, 4 and 5 over the year. It is also one night when everyone gets to put on their smartest clothes and enjoy a fabulous meal!
A Concord teacher has broken a British power lifting record. At twenty two stone John Bernasconi, who teaches mathematics at Concord, is in the super heavyweight category in his sport. He lifted 192.5 kilograms in the British Bench Press Championships which were held recently in Leicester.
Physics Gold Awards
Sixth form students at Concord have this year achieved outstanding results in the British Physics Olympiad (BPhO) and the AS Physics Challenge with nine gold certificates being awarded in total, which is a is a college record.
The 6.2 Leavers of 2013 were treated to a splendid evening to celebrate their final term at the college. As is the tradition at Concord, this was the last formal occasion for the senior students, before they leave the college and embark upon the next stage of their education. It was a time to celebrate the success of this very talented group of young people and to reflect upon their achievements.
Cheque for Hope House
A student led group at Concord, the Outreach Society, has presented a cheque for £1,100 to Hope House Children’s Hospices. The students raised the money during the Spring term at two different events at the college.
Win for Waldheim!
In an exciting competition this year, Waldheim have won the Concord Inter House trophy competition for a second year in a row. With nineteen events being contested over three terms, Waldheim took the title convincingly with Hammers in second position.
The Summer term’s sporting calendar of House competitions continued with the Swimming Gala on Sunday 5th May. A large crowd gathered to cheer on the swimmers and to enjoy the barbecue and refreshments provided by the kitchen on the terrace outside the pool on a beautiful Spring day!
Following the success of the Concord Drama Group’s production last year of ‘It Snows’, the Drama Group performed a similar one act ensemble play ‘Fugee’ by Abi Morgan in the Concord theatre on May 2nd & 3rd.
Concord student Jonathan Wu has been awarded this year’s Church Stretton & South Shropshire Arts Festival Award for his music studies. Roger Stokes, Chairman of the Arts Festival presented the annual award to Jonathan, in recognition of his achievement as the Outstanding Musician of The Year at Concord College.
Reserve for GB Team
Young physicist Andrei Gorbatch is confirmed as one of the top seven British Physics Olympians in the country. The Concord student in 6.1 is reserve for the British Physics Olympiad team that will compete against countries from all over the world in Denmark in July.
Extension to Art School
Concord students have given an ‘overwhelmingly’ positive response to a new £350,000 development at the Concord Art School. They say the extension to the Art School is enabling them to produce work that has become even more creative, inventive and larger in scale.
Trophy for Olivia
Accomplished young horsewoman Olivia Poole has returned from a show jumping competition in Belgium with a large silver trophy. In the Children on Horse competition at Zilvern Spoor Moorsele, Olivia, a day student at Concord in Form 3, won on one of her favourite horses, Residenz.
Skiing for GB!
A Concord student has achieved her ambition – to be selected for Team GB at skiing. Marion Legeais, a day student in Form 4, has been selected to represent GB in the under 16 Alpine Squad next season.
Road Race 2013
On Saturday 20th April, a large crowd gathered in front of the Main Hall for the annual Inter-House Road Race. This popular event marks the beginning of the athletics season at Concord in the Summer Term. There was a fantastic turnout with over 160 competitors taking part which is a record for this event.
Field Trip to Iceland
Sixth form geographers from Concord have observed at first hand ‘undeniable evidence’ that the planet’s climate is rapidly changing. The group of students from have just returned from a field trip to Iceland, the land of fire and ice.
Concord student Alexendra Tham only expected to be a reserve for the Shropshire and Telford round of a national poetry competition. But she was invited by the organisers to participate when those from another school dropped out due to the snowy weather.
Concord has a talented young mathematician who is ranked ninth in the UK. Toby Li (6.1) scored 28/40 in the final round of the British Mathematics Olympiad which he took part in earlier this term.
